Helicopter Commercial Pilot's Licence
The Commercial Pilot's Licence (CPL(H))
If you want to fly as a job you will need a Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL (H)). This is the standard professional licence, and can only be taken at approved Flight Training organisations like Heliflight. Before you start training for your CPL you need to have 155 hours of helicopter flying including 50 hours PIC under your belt.
You will also be studying a range of theory in greater depth than for your PPL. This covers technical aspects of helicopter flying, aviation law, communications, meteorology human performance, navigation, operational procedures, flight performance & planning together with instruments and electronics. This study can be done at home in your own time. There is also a compulsory ground school part of the course that lasts three weeks in total. Heliflight will organise ground school for you and you’ll get the opportunity to make friends with fellow pilots as you work towards passing your theory exams. You’ll need to pass nine commercial theory examinations, before you’re ready to begin the 35 hour commercial flying course where you will hone the flying skills you developed on your PPL and build upon them. You’ll become adept at emergency procedures including practicing landing a helicopter without power. You’ll also learn new flying skills like instrument flying and night flying.
At the end of the course is a commercial skill test where you demonstrate your abilities as a commercial pilot. Heliflight offers a modular flight training approach to obtaining a CPL (H) that helps you to train at your own pace and manage your finances.
